SOLD OUT: Virtual Giving Up Privilege Workshop

September 15 @ 10:00 am - September 17 @ 1:00 pm

“As long as we continue to use the language of ‘privilege’ to connote ‘advantages,’ we reinforce the very system of White supremacy that created racism in the first place and deny the healing White people must do to not only end Anti-Black and all other forms of racial injustice but to finally understand: ending racism is about White people coming home, embracing their inherent goodness and reclaiming their humanity.” – Nanci E. Luna Jiménez
Racial justice movements are human rights movements. Yet, the concept of “privilege” actually reifies White supremacy, sows separation and guilt, and represents a deep misunderstanding of racism and its impacts. During this workshop, participants will learn to discern and differentiate between three distinct phenomenon that have been lumped into “White Privilege:” 1) Systemic Cluelessness,” 2) Entitlement,” and 3) Human Rights. We will explore how “honor,” “benefit” and “advantage” narratives—all connotations of “privilege”—reinforce racism and White supremacy, advocate assimilation and result in genocide, and perpetuate paternalism and defensiveness: all counter-productive to solidarity and racial justice built on equity. Finally, we will also understand how “privilege” masks and denies the costs to White people as non-targets: loss of their humanity, connection and belonging. NOTE: This workshop will use “White privilege” for teaching concepts that apply to all non-targets and the use of “privilege” in social justice work broadly.
  • White People and Mixed Heritage people who Identify as White who are committed to being transformed by doing their own healing to end internalized White supremacy, separation, and finally come “home”
  • BIPOC who are committed to being transformed by a healing-based approach that requires White People give up dominance and become true allies in the struggle to end racism and White Supremacy
  • Understand how the “privilege” narrative perpetuates assimilation, guilt, and defensiveness, inadvertently keeping White supremacy and systemic racism in place
  • Be able to recognize and name patterns of internalized dominance and entitlement, non-target cluelessness, and human rights as distinct concepts
  • Shift from experiencing non-target identity as one of “privilege” to one of “loss” as we recognize the costs of oppression to and as non-targets
  • Increase commitment to build transformational relationships and community with fellow non-target group members to disrupt isolation and separation based on feeling “better than”
  • Face the grief and discharge the guilt as we support non-targets to “come home”
